What is Joomla?

Joomla! is a free and open source Content Management System (CMS) for publishing content on the World Wide Web and intranets as well as a model-view-controller (MVC) Web application framework. It is written in the PHP scripting language, stores data in a MySQL database and includes features such as page caching, RSS feeds, printable versions of pages, news flashes, blogs, polls, search, support for language internationalization and more. Joomla! is highly extensible with over 5,000 free and commercial, third-party plug-ins.

The name "Joomla" is the English spelling of the Swahili word jumla meaning "all together" or "as a whole." A sentiment that reflects the Joomla develpment team's programming philosophy. The application of this philosophy produced a mulitple award winning CMS that quickly took the web publishing world by storm. Within its first year of release, Joomla! was downloaded 2.5 million times. By September 2010 Joomla had been downloaded over 15 million times. This trend shows no signs of slowing down.
