Since computer hardware is only as good as the software running on it, web sites built by Pictor Design utilize well tested, industry standard software. Starting with the solid foundation of Red Hat Linux we add the Apache web server, one of the most popular and widely used content management systems available, a reliable web mail system and more.

Apache Web Server

In February of 1995, the most popular server software on the Web was the public domain HTTP daemon developed by Rob McCool at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications, University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. However, development of that httpd had stalled after Rob left NCSA in mid-1994, and many webmasters had developed their own extensions and bug fixes that were in need of a common distribution. A small group of these webmasters, contacted via private e-mail, gathered together for the purpose of coordinating their changes (in the form of "patches"). Brian Behlendorf and Cliff Skolnick put together a mailing list, shared information space, and logins for the core developers on a machine in the California Bay Area, with bandwidth donated by HotWired. By the end of February, eight core contributors formed the foundation of the original Apache Group. Apache has been the most popular web server on the Internet since April 1996. Jooml! CMS

Joomla is an award-winning content management system (CMS), which enables you to build Web sites and powerful online applications. Many aspects, including its ease-of-use and extensibility, have made Joomla the most popular Web site software available. Best of all, Joomla is an open source solution that is freely available to everyone.

Joomla is software that keeps track of every piece of content on your Web site, much like your local public library keeps track of books and stores them. Content can be simple text, photos, music, video, documents, or just about anything you can think of. A major advantage of using a CMS is that it requires almost no technical skill or knowledge to manage. Since the CMS manages all your content, you don't have to.

Joomla has attracted many users due to its ease of use. Joomla also includes more advanced features such as page caching to improve performance on busy sites, advanced templating techniques, and a very robust API. It can also automate many tasks such as web indexing for static pages. Joomla can provide RSS feeds, printable versions of pages, news flashes, blogs, forums, polls, calendars, website searching, language internationalization, and other possibilities. Joomla is released under the terms of the GNU General Public License (GPL)Version 2. It is written with the PHP programming language and uses the MySQL database. The Pictor Design web site that you are reading now is built with Joomla and showcases many of its capabilities. Learn more from joomla.org...
